PHNOM PENH, November 3, 2015—The World Bank looks forward to working with Cambodia to support the country’s efforts in reducing poverty and improving economic and social conditions for its people, especially in agriculture, health, education and transportation, said Axel van Trotsenburg, World Bank Regional Vice President for East Asia and Pacific, during his first official visit to Cambodia.
From October 29 to November 3, van Trotsenburg met Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen and also high-level government officials, parliamentarians, civil society, and development partners to discuss how to improve the lives of Cambodians, especially the most vulnerable. He also visited World Bank-supported projects in Tbong Khmum and Siem Reap provinces to engage with beneficiary communities.
“We saw firsthand that Cambodians can change their lives when they are given a chance, and this is very encouraging. They want to see more investments in rural development, health, education, transportation and other social services,” said van Trotsenburg. “The World Bank Group stands ready to support investments in these areas.”
Recently the World Bank Group held nationwide consultations with stakeholders in Cambodia on the country’s development challenges and opportunities. It is now in the process of preparing its prospective program of engagement with Cambodia using the full range of services, including analytical work, technical assistance, and financial support.
“We had excellent discussions and I look forward to continuing expanding our partnership with Cambodia,” said van Trotsenburg.
