Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Fisheries and Aquaculture

Fisheries and aquaculture products are a key component of a healthy diet for over a billion people.  In some low-and middle-income countries, fish make up more than half of the proportion of animal protein consumed.  But at all stages of the fisheries and aquaculture value chain, there is a high risk of contamination.

Proper water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure and practices are essential to the sector. Incorporating water, sanitation and hygiene interventions in fisheries and aquaculture can help improve the health and nutritional status of workers and communities and improve the safety of food products produced.
