Formation of Advisory Committee on WGI Methodology (February 2025)

For over two decades, the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) has been a leading global project for measuring perceptions of governance. As part of our commitment to maintaining the highest standards in governance measurement, we have convened an Advisory Committee to review and, if necessary, refine key aspects of the WGI methodology.

This review focuses on three critical questions:

  1. The selection of primary data sources
  2. The choice of governance dimensions (thematic areas)
  3. The statistical method used to aggregate primary data into country-year indicators

The Advisory Committee comprises distinguished experts in governance, statistics, and composite indicator methodology, including:

External committee members:

  1. Joseph Asunka (CEO, Afrobarometer)
  2. Eduardo Engel (Professor, University of Chile)
  3. Kyle Marquardt (Professor, University of Bergen. Head of Methodology for Varieties of Democracy)
  4. Karthik Muralidharan (Professor, University of California, San Diego)
  5. Benjamin Reist (Principal Statistician, NORC at the University of Chicago)
  6. Rajesh Srinivasan (Global Research Director, Gallup World Poll)
  7. Martin Williams (Associate Professor, University of Michigan and Oxford University)

World Bank committee members:

  1. Aart Kraay (Chief Economist, Prosperity Vertical)
  2. Bob Rijkers (Senior Economist, Research Group)
  3. Daniel Rogger (Research Manager, Impact Group)
  4. Mahvish Shaukat (Economist, Research Group)

Their expertise will help ensure the WGI remains a rigorous and credible tool for assessing governance worldwide.
