Next Generation Africa Climate Business Plan

Project Level Technical Assistance

Future climate change and variability are increasingly difficult to predict and quantify, making planning and project design challenging and costly. AFRI-RES provides catalytic grants to World Bank projects during the project design phase to enhance climate resilience outcomes of these investments and generate knowledge and learning. Thus far, 30 projects across 10 sectors have received catalytic grants (of €2.2 million) to deepen climate resilience in investments totaling $8 billion in IDA/IBRD financing.

Several projects have already applied the Resilience Booster Tool and are embedding resilience into key sectors. Project teams are using the funds in a variety of ways, including: (i) climate risk assessments; (ii) capacity building trainings; (iii) climate studies; and (iv) hiring technical experts. The process and final learning from these projects will be distilled for knowledge generation and wider dissemination through the AFRI-RES partners.

The list of projects below includes those that have received the technical assistance to better inform and design the projects for resilience. Status of the projects is reflected as follows: project in pipeline (preparation under way);  project approved (by the World Bank Board); or project dropped (due to  a variety of reasons) in which case the unspent AFRI-RES resources are returned.
