Myanmar: Rice Farmers and the Cycle of Poverty, October 2014

In Myanmar, people spend more than 60% of their income on food. A majority of those in rural areas live close to the poverty line and are at high risk of falling into poverty whenever rice prices fluctuate. Price volatility can be addressed by raising productivity, spreading production evenly over the year, improving milling and storage, strengthening market transparency, and adopting export-friendly policies.
