WARSAW, April 7, 2022 – World Bank Group President David Malpass will arrive in Warsaw on Monday, April 11, 2022, for a two-day visit. This will be Mr. Malpass’s first trip to Poland as World Bank Group President and the first mission by a Bank President to Poland since 2009.
Mr. Malpass is visiting Poland to commend its people for their embrace of Ukrainian refugees. During his visit, on April 12, Mr. Malpass will deliver a keynote speech ahead of the 2022 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In his speech, “Addressing Challenges to Growth, Security, and Stability,” President Malpass will discuss how the war in Ukraine, conflict and fragility, COVID-19, and climate change are creating unprecedented challenges for developing countries. This speech will be broadcast live from the Warsaw School of Economics.
“I commend the generosity of the Polish people during this crisis. We stand ready to provide financial and advisory support to Poland and neighboring countries to assist in the response to inflows of millions of refugees,” said World Bank Group President David Malpass. “Poland’s ability to support neighbors is in part due to its sustained economic growth over recent decades and its successful economic transformation.”
During his trip, David Malpass will meet with the authorities and partners of the World Bank Group in Poland, including from the private sector.
Joining Mr. Malpass on his visit will be Anna Bjerde, World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Gallina A. Vincelette, World Bank Country Director for the European Union, and Ary Naim, IFC Regional Manager, Central, and Southeast Europe.
The World Bank Group is a long-standing development partner of Poland. Since the economic transformation of the country in the early 90s, the World Bank has provided a total of over $16 billion in financing to Poland and implemented several advisory projects. Currently, the Bank’s support in Poland is focusing on issues around energy transition, clean air, regional development, and entrepreneurship.
