PRESS RELEASE

Statement by World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim on Death of Shimon Peres

September 28, 2016

WASHINGTON, September 28, 2016—World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim today issued the following statement on the death of Shimon Peres.

On behalf of the entire World Bank Group, I deeply mourn the loss of Shimon Peres. We have lost a champion for Israel and a tireless advocate for peace. We convey our deepest sympathy to Shimon Peres’s family and to the people of Israel.

The 1993 Oslo Accords, for which Peres was a key architect, showed that it was possible for bitter rivals to negotiate directly and see a brighter future. His Nobel Peace Prize was well deserved. As an organization founded on cooperation between all people around the globe, we at the World Bank Group believe that Shimon Peres’s revolutionary dream of peace between Israelis and Palestinians is still possible.

We long for that day, and we saddened by the death of a man who believed neighbors should be friends.
