Minister of Finance of Indonesia, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Becomes Development Committee Chair

WASHINGTON, August 16, 2016—The World Bank/IMF Development Committee today announced that the Honorable Ms. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, has been selected as its new Chair. She replaces Mr. Bambang Brodjonegoro, former Minister of Finance of Indonesia, effective on August 16, 2016.

Minister Indrawati has a distinguished record of service and achievement both at home and on the global stage. Before rejoining the Republic of Indonesia as Minister of Finance, a role she previously held from 2005 to 2010, Ms. Indrawati served as Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at the World Bank, where she was responsible for operations worldwide. She worked closely with client countries and member states to put operational strategies in place that addressed new and persistent development challenges in support of the World Bank’s goals of ending poverty and promoting shared prosperity. She was also responsible for the strategic direction and policy framework of the Bank’s Fund for the Poorest, IDA, one of the largest sources of assistance for the world’s 77 poorest countries. She also chaired the World Bank Group’s Advisory Council on Gender and Development, which brings together global leaders and experts on gender issues, including from the private sector.

From 2008 to 2010, she also served as the Coordinating Minister of the Economy for Indonesia. Her earlier positions include head of the Indonesian National Development Planning Agency, Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, faculty member at the University of Indonesia and visiting professor at the Andrew Young School of Public Policy at Georgia State University.

Minister Indrawati holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Illinois.

The Development Committee’s 25 members—mostly Finance or Development ministers—represent the full 189 country membership of the Bank and the Fund. The Committee’s mandate is to advise the Boards of Governors of the Bank and Fund on critical development issues.
