World Bank Vice President for Africa Makes First Official Visit to Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria, January 10, 2013 --- The World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Makhtar Diop will visit Nigeria on Sunday for his first official visit to the country since he assumed his new position in May, 2012. 

During his stay, he will hold discussions with key Government officials, development donors, civil society organizations, and youth leaders. He will also meet the Nigerian and international media at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon.

The Vice President’s visit will afford him a first-hand opportunity to better understand Nigeria’s development opportunities and challenges, and how the country plays a major leadership role in West Africa.

Mr. Diop, a former Finance Minister of Senegal, and former World Bank Country Director for Kenya, and later Brazil,  will visit  World Bank—financed development projects in education, in order to  see how best to make the Bank’s work in Nigeria more efficient and responsive to the country’s development needs.

The World Bank Vice President will also meet with President Goodluck Jonathan before departing for Washington on Tuesday 15, 2013.
