DURBAN, November 30, 2011—World Bank Group Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati will travel to Durban to attend the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Indrawati will lead a high-level Bank Group delegation that includes Sustainable Development Vice President, Rachel Kyte, Special Envoy for Climate Change, Andrew Steer, and International Finance Corporation Vice President Global Industries, Rashad Kaldany.
“Climate change threatens to undermine much of the development progress that has been made over the past 20 years,” Indrawati said. “The stakes are high. Durban needs to help move the world closer to a climate change agreement that is pro-poor and good for development.”
While in Durban from 6-8 December, Indrawati will share lessons learned on effective climate action from the World Bank Group’s global operations. In addition to bilateral meetings with key leaders in Durban, she will take part in a number of key events including: a stock-taking on sustainable energy goals with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and others; a high level discussion on climate-smart agriculture with former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan; the signing of a new World Bank financing agreement for Morocco’s concentrated solar power program; and a summit of mayors committed to climate action.
The World Bank Group is supporting more than 130 countries in their efforts to address climate change – by helping to increase resilience to climate risks, such as more frequent and more intense natural disasters, and by helping countries move to low-carbon development pathways.
