April 5, 2011

MOSCOW , April 5-7, 2011 - The Higher School of Economics, which has recently become a National Research University, with support of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, held a three-day International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development Problems. The Conference was chaired by its  Honorary Chairmen Professor Evgeny Yasin.

The Conference brought together the most respectful international and Russian  macroeconomists, as well as government officials, representatives of  private sector, think-tank and  civil society communities, as well as academia, to discuss challenges facing Russia’s post-crisis economic development. The Conference offered an extensive and extremely interesting program, featuring two special issues, including "Global economic crisis and prospects for modernization in Russia" and "Living standards and mode of life: changes in time and space".

Russia has successfully passed the global crisis, and it is necessary to learn it's lessons. The Conference proposed the comparison of the living standards in the country on the eve of the reforms and nowadays to draw conclusions on the achieved results and challenges ahead. "It’s not an easy task for the Russian economy to grow rapidly in the long, because the reforms have led to changes in the socio-economic system, as well as  have considerably influenced our current way of leaving," said Professor Yasin.

The plenary sessions on the first day of the Conference, which took place in the Polytechnic Museum, featured Minister of Finance Alexey Kudrin, Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz, Poland economist, and Axel van Trotsenburg, The World Bank's Vice President - along with other high-level representatives of scientific communities and international organizations.

During the last two days, a number of parallel sessions and round tables on the problems of economic and social development have been focused on multiple socio-economic topics, including macroeconomic and growth issues, public administration, innovative development, law, demography, labor markets and regional development.
