February 16, 2011, Dhaka: Ms. Inger Andersen, World Bank Vice President for Sustainable Development Network will arrive at Dhaka today for a five day visit.
Ms. Andersen became Vice President for Sustainable Development at the World Bank in July, 2010. She has overall responsibilities for the organization’s global work in agriculture, environmental, infrastructure, urban, and social development, along with global public goods issues in those areas. Prior to her appointment, she was Director of Sustainable Development in the Africa Region, where she oversaw a significant expansion in energy and agriculture programs, while also leading the Bank’s work in the region on mainstreaming climate action.
During her visit, Ms. Andersen will meet with senior government officials and the civil society to discuss Bangladesh’s development priorities and challenges, especially in relation to climate change, food security and infrastructure development.
She will undertake several site visits to Work Bank assisted project sites. In the southwest coastal area affected by cyclones she will visit cyclone shelters, coastal embankments, and livelihood projects, especially involving women. Ms. Andersen will visit the Padma Multipurpose Bridge site to see the ongoing work on resettlement sites. The Padma Bridge project is expected to be presented to the World Bank’s Board by end February 2011. She will also visit the Sunderbans area which is being supported through analytical work and an upcoming regional wildlife project.
