World Bank Executive Directors to Visit Comoros

February 26, 2010

MORONI, February 26, 2010 — A delegation of World Bank Executive Directors will visit the Union of the Comoros from February 26 to March 2, 2010, as part of a three-nation Africa visit from February 26 to March 10, 2010. The Executive Directors will also visit Kenya and Seychelles.

The main purpose of the visit is for the Executive Directors to assess the World Bank’s contribution to Comoro’s development agenda. The Executive Directors want in particular to have a first-hand picture of Comoro’s achievements on the socio-economic development front, appreciate its development challenges, and engage in a dialogue on the World Bank’s support to Comoros going forward.

While in Comoros, they will familiarize themselves with World Bank activities in the country, listen to government perspectives on development challenges and engage with Bank staff on country specific and global operations. They will also visit Bank-financed projects in transport and education. The visit will also give them perspectives on climate change impact and mitigation, as well as on initiatives for growth and improving incomes for the most vulnerable people of Comoros.

In addition to the policy dialogue with senior Government officials, the Executive Directors will also have meetings with representatives of the private sector, civil society and other groups.

The Bank is supporting one project in Comoros, the Services Support Project, with a commitment of US$18.3 million equivalent. It is helping Comoros to fight poverty and improve the living standards of its people.
