Rejina Tamang, Trekking Guide
Born and raised in Kathmandu, Rejina never thought she would be a trekking guide. The only travelling she did growing up were occasional visits to religious sites or trips to her ancestral home, Nuwakot.
As it happens in 2018, as part of the Solo Woman Travel Challenge, Rejina did the Rolwaling trek, between the Langtang and Everest mountain ranges. It was a transformative experience for her.
She decided to take a course on trek tour leader at the Nepal Academy of Tourism & Hotel Management and was the only woman in a class of 50. Two years later, Rejina now works as a freelance trek guide for companies based in Nepal and has led treks in Manang, Mustang, Helambu, Mardi, Langtang, and Annapurna to name a few.
The tourism sector was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic and the lockdown. Rejina had no option but to stay home, which was hard for someone bitten by the travel bug. During this time, she helped out at her parents’ farm in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu and delivered vegetables around the area taking the appropriate precautions.
With the return of some sense of normalcy in Nepal, Rejina is exploring the possibilities of promoting women in outdoor activities - she would like to organize camping and short hiking trips around Kathmandu specifically catering to women.
