With the support of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Hub Tokyo, the World Bank’s Building Regulation for Resilience (BRR) program held a technical workshop in Brussels on June 6, 2017 to initiate the development of a new practical tool, a “Roadmap for a Resilient Built Environment”, to assist client countries in strengthening their capacity to promote effective implementation and compliance of building regulation. The objective of the Roadmap is to provide step-by-step actions and a set of practical instruments for national and local governments to scope context-specific issues, assess their current capacity and prioritize investments for improving resilience and promoting a healthy and safe built environment. The Roadmap will also help Project Managers in initiating conversations with clients around ways BRR program activities can contribute to overcoming the challenges they face with respect to the built environment.
This technical workshop convened global practitioners who have led efforts, supported by the Country Program of the DRM Hub Tokyo , in countries such as Ethiopia, India, Jamaica, and the Philippines, as well as experts from Japan, EU, Ecuador, Nepal and the USA. During the workshop, experts and practitioners from these countries shared insights into their experiences in promoting regulatory reform on the ground and the different approaches they adopted to achieve a common goal – making safer and resilient cities. The group of experts discussed: essential components of regulatory reform; applicable scenarios; good practices and supporting evidence; and available practical tools that can be integrated into the Roadmap.
