As a follow-up support to the delegation that visited Japan from the Kyrgyz Republic alongside with Armenia and Tajikistan, the World Bank Disaster Risk Management Hub, Tokyo organized a knowledge exchange on disaster warning through mobile phones with Kyrgyz Republic via video conference. As per specific request from counterparts in the Kyrgyz Republic, DRM Hub invited a public warning system expert from a major Japanese telecommunications operator, who provides disaster warning services.

In the Kyrgyz Republic, disaster warning is actively transmitted via TV, mobile phones and other media at national scale. Currently, the Ministry of Emergency Situations is considering to further enhance the function of disaster warning system by, for example, customizing the communication system to send warnings through mobile phones to targeted residents in specific areas likely to be affected by disasters.

This knowledge exchange paves the path to enhance disaster response capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic by learning from international experience. DRM Hub will continue to facilitate such knowledge exchanges to mainstream DRM into wider national development and investment.
