The year 2015 will mark the 60th anniversary of the strong and close cooperation between the World Bank Group and the Republic of Korea. The WBG and Korea will commemorate this important milestone of partnership by planning a series of innovative events and activities.

To start off, the WBG Korea Office and the Republic of Korea Ministry of Strategy and Finance will co-host “Korea Week 2015 – Retrospect and Prospect” in the Republic of Korea, from June 1-5, 2015. The Conference first two days (June 1-2) will be held in Songdo, Incheon City; the Public Engagement Event will be held on the third day (June 3) in Seoul; and Side events are being planned for the fourth and fifth days (June 4-15) in Korea.

This conference will illustrate the Republic of Korea’s incredible economic and social progress and its role as a unique donor, showcase the rich and productive 60 years of partnership between the WBG and Korea, and provide a collaborative and interactive arena to increase synergies and learning across a wide diversity of key development themes and issues. This is in association with the twin goals of the World Bank Group: End extreme poverty within a generation and boost shared prosperity. The event will consist of thematic sessions to showcase the ongoing Republic of Korea-financed World Bank Group programs, and explore ways to maximize the potential of their engagement with Korea as a growing donor, as well as panel discussions by development practitioners and scholars to discuss global development challenges. The schedule will permit time before and after formal proceedings for WBG and Korean counterparts to also meet on respective partnerships and programs. Participants will include leaders and professionals from across governments, academia, the private sector, and partners.

We look forward to your participation in this important event!

Conference Structure

The main conference will start on June 1 at 9:30am and conclude on June 2 at 6:30pm. Six Thematic Sessions on important sector and policy issues will run concurrently on June 1-2, in two sets. Set one will include (a) Theme 1 - Information & Communications Technology – Closing the Gaps; (b) Theme 2 - Urban & Climate Change; and (c) Theme 3 - Leadership, Learning & Innovation – Accelerators of Development. Set two will include (a) Theme 4 - Fostering Competitiveness – Advancing Skills and Supporting SMEs; (b) Theme 5 - Public & Private Partnership (PPP) – Trend toward a Hybrid Approach; and (c) Theme 6 - Financial Systems for Sustainable Growth.

On June 3, the WBG will host a Public Engagement Day in Seoul, which will include two Panel Sessions: (i) “Global Development Challenges and the Role of WBG”; and (ii) “Working in the WBG”. This event will start at 9:00am and conclude at 12:40pm.

A series of conference side events are planned during June 4-5. Additional information is forthcoming.
