Practice Manager, Fragility, Conflict and Violence

Sarah Michael is the Manager of the Strategy, Analytics, Financing Solutions and Knowledge Unit within the World Bank’s Fragility, Conflict and Violence Group.  Sarah has over 18 years of experience in sustainable development, with a focus on peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery.  She has led innovative work on conflict and fragility and on social inclusion, including in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.  She has also worked on a wide range of operations on community-driven development, social service delivery, livelihoods, health and youth development.

Before joining the World Bank, Sarah worked on the international Commission on Human Security and on a variety of development and security initiatives at the Global Equity Initiative, a research and policy institute at Harvard University.  Her first book, Undermining Development: The Absence of Power among Local NGOs in Africa was published in 2004.

Sarah holds MPhil and PhD degrees from Cambridge University and a Bachelor’s degree from Queens University in Canada.
