The southwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was one of China’s poorest provinces. In 2015, Guangxi had more than 6.35 million poor people as measured by the national rural poverty line of 2,300 yuan (US$339.7) a year at 2010 constant price, with a poverty rate at 10.5 percent. To support its fight against poverty, the World Bank approved a loan of US$ 400 million in 2018 for the Guangxi Poverty Reduction Program for Results. The program has focused its support on enhancing Guangxi’s poverty reduction big data platform, developing a poverty reduction infrastructure project management information system, and integrating poverty reduction funds from multiple sources. In southwest China, the World Bank-financed Guangxi Poverty Reduction Program for Results has improved rural livelihoods and incomes through development of farmer cooperatives and their linkages with businesses, professional farmers training and basic rural infrastructure. The big data platform, infrastructure project management information system, and integrated use of poverty reduction funds supported by the project have increased the effectiveness and efficiency of poverty reduction efforts.
