With World Bank support, 74 hospitals serving 13.6 million people in the northern part of Vietnam have received major upgrades in terms of medical equipment and technical skills. As a result, these hospitals in the Northeast and Red River Delta regions are in a better position to offer treatment services for a wider range of conditions, including more acute and complex illnesses. Residents of these regions, many of them living in remote areas, benefit the most from this development. Instead of going to medical centers in far-away big cities, which are expensive and time-consuming, they now can rely on the hospital network nearby for the majority of their healthcare needs.
