A World Bank-financed project helps set up farmers cooperatives in 11 poor counties in China’s southwest Guizhou Province. Small-scale farmers join the co-ops by converting their land use rights into shares and benefit from joint processing and sales of their products, salaries from working for the coop and a dividend in proportion to the shares they own. The co-ops provide jobs and a source of income particularly to women, who stay behind to take care of their families while their husbands work in cities, as well as returned migrant workers and older people, helping reduce poverty in one of the country’s poorest provinces.
