Disrupting the Gender Divide: The Power of Online Platforms

Online platforms are increasing economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs around the world, and World Bank/IMF Spring meetings featured two women who are creating successful businesses through the power of digital technology. Taking the stage at the Thursday’s event, Wafaa Al-Ashwali and Honey Ogundeyi discussed how they overcame barriers to grow their online businesses and shared ideas on how to help women entrepreneurs succeed in the digital age.Al-Ashawali, the co-founder & CEO of Serviis in Saudi Arabia and Ogundeyi of Fashpa in Nigeria, were joined by a panel of public and private sector leaders including Anne Finucane, vice chairman, Bank of America and Jean Liu, president of Didi Chuxing, one of the world’s leading mobile transportation companies, Minister Ulla Tornaes from Denmark; and Stephanie von Friedeburg, COO, International Finance Corporation. For women entrepreneurs, even those operating in difficult environments, digital inclusion can play a pivotal role, providing financing, knowledge and connections at their fingertips – through online platforms. Internet access and a mobile phone can mean access to a bank account for the first time, or a new tool to connect to markets, networks and information.
