Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Video Meeting with Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze of Germany

WASHINGTON, FEBRUARY 9, 2023 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass had a video meeting with Svenja Schulze, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Germany’s Governor of the World Bank Group.

Noting the urgent need in Türkiye for assistance to help relief and recovery efforts following devastating earthquakes and aftershocks, President Malpass told Minister Schulze that the World Bank was providing immediate assistance and preparing a rapid assessment of the urgent and massive needs on the ground.

President Malpass updated Minister Schulze on the World Bank Group’s work to respond to the global food crisis, building on the Global Alliance for Food Security that was established by the World Bank Group and Germany during its 2022 G7 presidency.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze had a good discussion on the evolution of the World Bank to respond to the multiple crises facing developing countries and the Bank’s rapid expansion of commitments for development and climate change. President Malpass and Minister Schulze discussed the World Bank Group’s mission and resources, and President Malpass expressed appreciation for the strong support for the Bank’s responsiveness and effectiveness.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze also discussed coordination on a Global Accelerator to increase social protection coverage, the ability for the World Bank’s SCALE trust fund to manage projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the need for debt relief for overburdened countries, and the global sovereign debt “roundtable” that will take place later this month.
