WASHINGTON, NOVEMBER 29 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass spoke by phone with Svenja Schulze, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Germany’s Governor of the World Bank Group.

President Malpass thanked Minister Schulze for Germany’s efforts under Chancellor Olaf Scholz to help address the global fertilizer crisis and noted recent progress on this critical issue.

President Malpass and Minister Schulze held good discussions on the World Bank Group’s (WBG) cooperative efforts with Germany, during which President Malpass was happy to reaffirm the WBG’s strong partnership with Germany on social protection efforts, food and fertilizer issues, and efforts to better climate resilience in developing countries.

President Malpass highlighted to Minster Schulze recent progress on digitalization efforts, including direct cash transfers to the poorest and most vulnerable – particularly women. President Malpass and Minister Schulze also addressed the need for greater progress on reducing unsustainable debt burdens and reducing developing countries’ total debt stock, as well as the importance of creating pathways to work directly with creditors for countries that have not pursued debt treatment under the Common Framework.
