WASHINGTON, October 12, 2021 – This morning, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo.
President Malpass and President Gnassingbé discussed Togo’s development priorities, including diversification of the economy, social transfers, improving the business enabling environment, and opportunities stemming from digitalization. President Malpass highlighted the World Bank Group’s (WBG) strong support for the people of Togo through IDA projects and new commitments, including budget support. President Malpass noted that the upcoming discussions on the new Country Partnership Framework with Togo represent a good opportunity to focus support on critical elements of the government’s agenda and underscore the need for donor coordination.
President Malpass emphasized the importance of improving sustainability of the agriculture sector and making it more resilient to climate change, which will benefit the livelihoods of rural communities and strengthen economic growth. President Malpass and President Gnassingbé also addressed Togo’s phosphate sector and reviewed potential opportunities for the private sector to develop fertilizer production given the global shortage.
President Malpass and President Gnassingbé exchanged views on growing insecurity and the fragility challenge in the Sahel region, and discussed how to strengthen regional cooperation and better coordinate international aid to address drivers of conflict, including the inflow of weapons into the region.
