Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance of South Africa

WASHINGTON, April 23 – Yesterday, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa.

President Malpass and Minister Godongwana exchanged views on the global economy and South Africa’s economic prospects. President Malpass emphasized the importance of private sector growth and job creation, especially for youth and welcomed South Africa’s efforts to improve business climate.

President Malpass and Minister Godongwana also discussed energy sector reforms and the energy transition, including plans for decommissioning coal-fired power plants and increasing renewable energy sources.

President Malpass and Minister Godongwana also spoke on the partnership between the WBG and South Africa and exchanged views on the innovative financing instruments, including the recent wildlife conservation bond by IBRD to protect black rhinos in South Africa.
