WASHINGTON, September 23, 2021— Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Hakainde Sammy Hichilema of Zambia.
President Malpass and President Hichilema discussed Zambia’s urgent reform priorities, including restoring macroeconomic stability, reducing unsustainable debt levels, and strengthening economic growth to create jobs and improve living standards for all Zambians.
President Malpass affirmed the World Bank’s Group support to improve financial management, and public procurement processes. President Malpass also welcomed the Zambian government’s efforts to enhance transparency of debt contracts in order to promote accountability and mitigate corruption.
President Malpass and President Hichilema discussed the need to improve the business climate in Zambia and the World Bank’s support to reforming the regulatory framework and tax system, including for the mining sector.
President Malpass also welcomed Zambia’s emphasis on environmental sustainability and its plans to increase its use of renewable energy sources.
