Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State, United Kingdom

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2021 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State of the United Kingdom. President Malpass updated Secretary Raab on the World Bank Group’s new Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) and emphasized the Bank’s focus on green, resilient, and inclusive development. President Malpass and Secretary Raab also discussed the upcoming COP26 Summit, with President Malpass voicing strong support for the United Kingdom’s leadership on climate issues.

President Malpass also highlighted the World Bank Group’s ongoing fast, broad response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including work on vaccine access and distribution. He noted his expectation that country financing totaling around $4 billion would be in place for up to 50 countries by mid-year, including financing available to purchase doses from COVAX as soon as its supplies allow. He noted the World Bank’s strong partnership with the IMF on support to the G20 Common Framework. Noting that the United Kingdom is the largest contributor to IDA, President Malpass thanked Secretary Raab for his country’s strong support for an early IDA20. President Malpass expressed his hope that the United Kingdom would continue to play a leading role in the IDA20 replenishment. He noted the importance of a successful IDA20 to priorities including crisis preparedness, primary healthcare, girls’ education and food security.
