World Bank statement on the Women, Business and the Law 2019 report

ISLAMABAD, January 7, 2020 - We acknowledge the debate our tweet on the World Bank Group’s global Women Business & the Law report has sparked.  The report looks at laws affecting women’s participation in the economy around the world.

A clear law and alignment between law and practice creates predictability for entrepreneurs and investors, both women and men.

For registering a business in Pakistan, the report looked at the Companies Act, 2017.  Sections 31c and 37c require different information from women and from men.

Married women are asked to provide the name of their spouse or deceased spouse, which is not the case for men.  We were glad to hear from many women entrepreneurs who were not constrained by this.

We look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure a level playing field and further boost women entrepreneurship in Pakistan so that they can continue to make important contributions to the economy
