WASHINGTON, April 5, 2018 - Today, the World Bank approved $25 million in additional financing for the Statistics Capacity Building Project (PSTAT).
The original project was approved the World Bank Group on June 9, 2014 and helped the National Institute of Statistics (INS) formulate key activities to expedite the collection of essential data, such as population and enterprise censuses, budget and household consumption surveys, and the production of consumer price indices. Moreover, the publication of statistical yearbooks under the project helped bring an end to several years of a lack of coordination between the statistical departments of the sector ministries and the INS and promote collaboration among them.
“The World Bank remains committed to helping the Republic of Congo develop a sustainable national statistical system so that the country may collect and disseminate reliable statistics that are critical for the formulation of its development policies and for decision making,” said Djibrilla Issa, World Bank Country Manager in the Republic of Congo.
Initially planned for June 30, 2019, the PSTAT closing date was extended to April 30, 2021.
“The additional financing from IBRD will cover the costs associated with the new activities requested by the Government, such as the construction of a building for the INS and of the Centre d'application de la statistique et de la planification (Center for Applied Statistics and Planning). It will also finance the introduction of performance-based incentives to boost staff motivation and performance, technical assistance to support the macroeconomic framework committee, and support for the preparation of a national development plan,” said Franck M. Adoho, World Bank Task Team Leader.
