April 10, 2010

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2010 — World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick today expressed his condolences to Poland on the tragic accident that claimed the lives of President Lech Kaczyński and political and military officials, including the head of Poland’s national bank, Sławomir Skrzypek:

“I was shocked and deeply saddened by news of the horrific plane crash that claimed the lives of Polish president Lech Kaczyński, his wife and First Lady Maria Kaczyńska, and so many of Poland's political and military leaders. This is a heavy blow to Poland and one that is felt by so many of its friends. Among the dead is the President of the National Bank of Poland, Sławomir Skrzypek, with whom the World Bank had a warm and fruitful relationship that exemplified our close cooperation with the government. Our thoughts are now with the families and loved ones in their time of loss.”
