Investing in Sustainable Livestock Guide

Image

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Livestock production can have positive and negative impacts on natural resources and climate, animal and public health, and equity
  • Decisions made during project design and implementation determine the direction and magnitude of impacts livestock development has on the environment, health, and equity
  • This guide offers a structured approach for project teams to facilitate greater sustainability in the livestock sector.

In April 2021, the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched the new version of the Investing in Sustainable Livestock (ISL) Guide (www.sustainablelivestockguide.org), an information resource for designing and implementing sustainable livestock development projects. The new version now offers sustainability guidance for animal health, in addition to the original guidance on environment.

The ISL Guide offers an interactive component that provides context-specific guidance, suggested activities, and indicators to help livestock projects contribute to sustainability. This tailored guidance also includes references for further investigation.

The guide will be updated on an ongoing basis with new resources and tools. The next iteration of the guide will be expanded to include guidance on equity.
