Mediterranean Climate Change Initiative: Threats and Opportunities Unite Us

October 2010 -  Shamshad Akhtar, Vice President, Middle East and North Africa Region participated in the launch of the Mediterranean Climate Change Initiative (MCCI) on October 22, 2010 in the Athens coastal town of Vouliagmeni.

During this conference, Shamshad Akhtar shared the World Bank’s position and perspective with a large number of policy makers who adopted a declaration voicing their commitment to measures needed to reduce the effects of climate changes. 

Also read Shamshad Akhtar's blog post: "Threats and opportunities unite us".As a show of solidarity and a lead up to Cancun, a Mediterranean Climate Change Initiative (MCCI) was launched in the Athens coastal town of Vouliagmeni, this past week. Fifteen member countries signed a declaration that binds them to work together to combat the effects of climate change, seek to promote low carbon, resource efficient, and climate resilient economies, and take actions and measures to handle climatic change. To take forward this initiative, an expert group is to meet in Malta in the coming months to be followed by a second MCCI event in Turkey.
