The Data Privacy Offices of the World Bank, IFC, and MIGA hosted the fifth annual World Bank Group Data Privacy Day on January 31, 2024. The half-day event saw the WBG convene several curated panels on pressing data privacy issues, technology, artificial intelligence, and more. Seasoned data protection and privacy leaders and experts from inside and outside the Bank deep dive into the latest trends and offer insights into how development institutions, governments, and the private sector can play a critical role in addressing privacy risks. The event welcomed over 100 attendees in-person in the Ibrahim Shihata Conference Room in Washington, DC, and over 250 colleagues online from WBG offices worldwide.

Session 2, Innovation & Risk: AI & Privacy at the World Bank Group, explored the explosive phenomenon of artificial intelligence, including a short introduction to large language models, a tour of current AI initiatives at the WBG, and a discussion of the major governance challenges AI poses in an uncertain legal landscape.

Data Privacy Day is an international effort that takes place annually to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust. World Bank Group Data Privacy Day is one of the premier global Data Privacy Day events, which internally and externally promotes privacy awareness and best practices for the responsible handling of personal data.
