Africa’s Pulse: COVID-19 and the Future of Work in Africa

As the COVID-19 crisis has changed the work landscape across the world, African countries are harnessing the power of digital technologies, and investing in the future of Africa’s workforce. With Africa’s young population driving innovation across the continent, they will help to create more job opportunities, and will need the support of forward-thinking governments and the private sector to make their vision a reality.

Join World Bank Africa Chief Economist Albert Zeufack for the launch of the Spring 2021 edition of Africa’s Pulse, the region’s biannual macroeconomic analysis. In a discussion with Dimpho Lekgeu, Zeufack will provide an update on the macroeconomic situation in African countries amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, and take a closer look at jobs and the future of work as crucial elements of economic recovery post-pandemic.

    Albert Zeufack

    AFRICA REGION CHIEF ECONOMIST, WORLD BANK

    Albert Zeufack, a Cameroonian national, is the World Bank Chief Economist for the Africa Region. He joined the World Bank in 1997 as a research economist in the macroeconomics division of the Research Department. Since then, he has held several positions in the East Asia and Pacific region, as well as in the Macroeconomics and Fiscal Management Global Practice with a particular focus on Africa, Europe and Central Asia. Mr. Zeufack’s main research interest is the micro-foundations of macroeconomics. Prior to his appointment as Chief Economist, he was Practice Manager in the Macroeconomics and Fiscal Management Global Practice and leader of the World Bank-wide Community of Practice for the Management of Natural Resources Rents, a group interested in sovereign wealth, fiscal rules, public spending patterns, and macro-modeling in natural resource-rich economies. Before joining the World Bank, Mr. Zeufack taught economics and applied econometrics at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, France, where he received his Ph.D. in economics. He holds a master’s degree in economic analysis and policy from the University of Yaoundé, Cameroon.

    Dimpho Lekgeu

    Community Manager at Youth Lab

    Dimpho Lekgeu is the Community Manager at Youth Lab, a policy think tank that works to improve youth capacity and mainstream youth participation in community building and policy making. Through her work as a journalist, she centers the experiences of youth and women in Africa, highlighting the socio-economic challenges that affect their daily lives. In 2018, she was awarded the Leading South Africa Candidate Scholarship to attend the One Young World Summit in the Netherlands.
