Launch of the Platform Initiative in Support of Coal Regions in Transition in Western Balkans and Ukraine

The Platform Initiative for Coal Regions in Western Balkans and Ukraine, created in September 2019, assits coal regions in developing and implementing a comprehensive policies that enable inclusive strategies for transitioning to low-carbon energy systems. It was established based on Western Balkan countries’ commitment to clean energy transition expressed in the Podgorica Joint Statement of 21 February 2019 and Ukraine’s 2050 Low Emission Development Strategy of November 2017.This initiative is further reinforced and guided by the Sofia Declaration on the Green Growth Agenda for the Western Balkans of November 2020.

This Platform Initiative is a collective effort by the World Bank Groupthe College of Europe (Natolin campus)the Energy Community Secretariatthe European Bank for Reconstruction and Developmentthe European Commission and the Government of Poland.  These institutions are working together in cooperation with partners in Western Balkans and Ukraine, to deliver knowledge to coal regions and governments, to share valuable lessons learned, and to twin with European counterpart regions, principally through meetings and the Coal Regions in Transition Learning Academy.

The Platform Initiative for Coal Regions in the Western Balkans and Ukraine will be officially launched during a virtual event on December 10 and 11, 2020. The event brings together representatives from coal regions of Western Balkans and Ukraine to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned on the energy transition.
