  • Global Winners for ‘SDGs and Her” Competition for Women Micro-Entrepreneurs Helping to Achieve the SDGs

In 2015, all 193 United Nations member countries signed on to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to "create the future we want in 2030.” Three years since the global goals adoption, a wide array of stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, civil society, international organizations, and citizens around the world, have joined forces to help achieve the ambitious agenda.

The World Bank Group, in partnership with UNDP, UN Women, and the Wharton School Zicklin Center, launched the SDGs&Her, an online competition in April 2018 to identify women entrepreneurs across the world, whose business operations help support the SDGs. The main objectives of the initiative are to: (i) recognize women implementing the SDGs, including women business owners of microenterprises; (ii) increase knowledge about the SDGs and their potential impacts on women among non-traditional audiences; and (iii) collaborate with private sector partners on all SDGs, but SDG 5 in particular; to share best practices and innovative ideas.

On September 24, 2018, the World Bank Group and its partners will hold an event to celebrate the 2018 winners of the "SDGs and Her" competition for women micro-entrepreneurs whose businesses help achieve the SDGs.

The event will feature the two global winners: Tanzania-based WomenChoice Industries owned by Lucy Odiwa; and Mukuru Clean Stoves of Kenya, owned by Charlot Magayi. The winners were selected from a pool of over 1,200 contenders from 88 countries through a rigorous three-stage judging process.
