Global value chains have transformed world trade. GVCs create new opportunities for developing countries, increase their participation in global markets and enable them to diversify exports. But while global value chains have helped many developing countries advance, some have benefited more than others.

The Global Value Chain Development Report, a joint publication from the World Bank Group, WTO, OECD, Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) and the Research Center of Global Value Chains of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), analyzes new data to understand global trade’s increasing complexity and formulate policies that can make GVCs more inclusive. At this event, global trade experts from the World Bank Group, WTO and OECD will present their findings and discuss with audience participants.

Nadim Ahmad

Head of Trade and Competitiveness Statistics Division, OECD
Nadim Ahmad is the Head of the Trade and Competitiveness Statistics Division of the OECD’s Statistics Directorate, where he leads work on trade statistics, entrepreneurship, productivity and Trade in Value-Added, and is at the forefront of international efforts to develop integrated international economic accounts. He has produced a number of publications and papers in the fields of entrepreneurship, the informal economy, productivity, capital measurement, input-output analyses, Intellectual Property Products, Globalisation and Trade in Value-Added, reflecting over 20 years’ experience in official statistics, and was the OECD representative on the Inter Secretariat Working Group on National Accounts that developed the 2008 System of National Accounts. Prior to joining the OECD in 2000, Nadim worked at the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics - where he led work to develop more coherent annual national accounts and analytical tools to estimate quarterly GDP – and the UK’s Finance Ministry (HM Treasury) where he was responsible for monitoring and forecasting, government expenditure, borrowing and debt. He has also conducted PhD research on sonars for the UK’s Admiralty Research Establishment and holds a 1st class honours degree in Mathematics.

Christophe Degain

Senior Statistician, International Trade Statistics Section, Economic Research and Statistics Division, World Trade Organization
Mr. Christophe Degain is Senior Statistician in the International Trade Statistics Section within the Economic Research and Statistics Division at the World Trade Organization. In his current position, he conducts the development of statistical programmes and studies on trade statistics, trade in value added and global value chains. He also leads IT projects applied to statistics. Prior to this post, he worked at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development as Statistician in the Main Economic Indicators Division, in charge of the development of composite leading indicators and business surveys, along with the management of IT projects within the Statistical Technology Unit.

Anabel Gonzalez

Senior Director, Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice, World Bank Group
Anabel González is Senior Director of the World Bank Group Global Practice on Trade and Competitiveness. In this capacity, she leads a team of 500 people to design and implement the World Bank Group's global and country agenda in the areas of trade, investment climate, competitiveness, innovation and entrepreneurship. Ms. González served as Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Trade from 2010 to 2014. During her tenure, she led Costa Rica’s efforts to join the OECD, negotiated, approved, and implemented six major free trade agreements, and implemented investment climate enhancement policies that contributed to attracting over 140 new investment projects. Ms. González is the current Chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Competitiveness.

Robert Koopman

Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, World Trade Organization
Mr. Robert Koopman is the Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Research and Statistics Division at the World Trade Organization. In this post Bob provides the Secretariat and Member Countries with analysis and information that promotes a deeper understanding of trade and trade policy's role in economic growth and development. Prior to this post he served as the Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer for the United States International Trade Commission. Bob oversaw the Commission’s trade policy research and negotiation assistance to the President, the U.S. Trade Representative, and Congress; antidumping, countervailing duty, and safeguard; investigations; intellectual property investigations; maintenance and analysis of the Harmonized Tariff System, as well as the agency’s strategic planning and performance measurement initiatives. He also previously served as Chief Economist at the USITC, and various leadership positions at the Economic Research Service of USDA. He is also currently a visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

Jose Guilherme Reis

Practice Manager, Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice, World Bank Group
José Guilherme Reis is the Practice Manager for Trade in the Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice, after two years as Program Leader for Competitiveness and Growth in the World Bank office in Turkey. He joined the WB Turkey team in 2013 after four years as Lead Economist with the International Trade Department in Washington DC, where he led the program on trade and competitiveness. He led several studies on competitiveness, trade, and growth in countries in different parts of the world, including Latin America, Africa, South Asia and Europe and Central Asia. He joined the Bank in 2004 and his work program has been focused on the microeconomic agenda for growth and topics related to competitiveness. Before joining the bank, he occupied the positions of Secretary for Economic Policy in the Ministry of Finance in Brazil, 2001-2002 and Chief of Economic Advisors with the Ministry of Planning and Budget, 1999-2001 He holds a Masters degree on Economics and Public Finance from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where has been Professor at the Department of Economics since 1983.
