Public Symposium by JICA and the World Bank— Improvement of children’s learning through local community and school collaboration— ‘From experience of “School for All” Project and evidence from the world’
November 21, 2016Tokyo

Quality education is a fundamental human right that everyone must enjoy, and it is also an enabler for realizing all the other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet it is estimated that 250 million children, or at least 40 % of primary school age children in the world, are not learning basic skills in literacy and numeracy (UNESCO, 2014). To address this challenge, JICA has supported the improvement of school management through community participation by ‘School for All Project’ in Africa since 2004, and is working with these countries to improve children’s learning.

In this symposium, the speakers will discuss the importance of community and school collaboration for improving children’s learning and the role of education administration, and share good practices and lessons learned. The discussion will also cover how the trust building between community and school can contribute to the local community development, and what role education can play in progress of society.

We will invite various speakers and panelists with deep expertise and rich experiences in this field, including Co-directors of the World Development Report (WDR) to be published by the World Bank next year and the founder of “School for All” project of JICA. The experiences in West Africa and Japan will also be shared by the Cabinet Director, the Ministry of Education of Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, and Superintendent of Mitaka City respectively.
