Pedro Martins Senior Country Economist for Lao PDR


Pedro Martins is the Senior Country Economist for Lao PDR, leading the Bank’s engagements on macro-fiscal policy issues. His responsibilities also include macroeconomic monitoring and reporting, and supporting the country office on economic issues. Previously he was the Senior Country Economist for Timor-Leste.

Before joining the World Bank, Pedro worked for the UN Economic Commission for Africa (Rwanda), UNDP’s Human Development Report Office (United States), Overseas Development Institute (United Kingdom), UNDP (Mozambique), and the European Commission (Belgium).

Pedro has a policy and research background, having mainly worked on issues pertaining to macroeconomic and fiscal policies, development finance, inclusive growth, structural change, and employment. He has published articles in Applied Economics, Development Policy Review, Journal of Development Studies, and World Trade Review.

Pedro holds a PhD in Economics and a Master’s degree in Development Economics, both from the University of Sussex (United Kingdom).
