The purpose of this study is to assess the status of End-of-Life (EOL) and Abandoned; Lost; or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) in coastal fisheries in a selected two to three Pacific Island countries (PIC) and support awareness building among coastal people engaged in fisheries to encourage best practices in litter disposal. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the contribution of coastal fisheries to regional marine pollution in the form of EOL gear and ALDFG and to provide recommendations to help strengthen national and regional policies to reduce ALDFG in the fisheries. The specific objectives are as follows:A. To build a profile on coastal fisheries (subsistence; commercial small-scale; and industrial) in a selected PIC focusing on fishing practices; boat types; fishing methods and gear. b. Evaluate the extent and impact of EOL and ALDFG in (from) coastal fisheries in a selected PIC. c. Develop a GIS-based maps to identify areas that are vulnerable to the impact ALDFG may have on habitat and biodiversity; and blue economy. d. Identify areas that are vulnerable to ALDFG impacts in relation to Climate Change; using modelling approach and maps.e. Collect visual evidence of marine litter/ALDFG incidences for awareness raising; supported by GPS coordinates.e) Develop material for awareness building and training of Fisheries Officers on the impact ALDFG may have on coastal environment and ways to help communities to manage EOL gear – including boats.f) Create an action plan; outlining a comprehensive roadmap for successful implementation.
