World Bank Group Statement on Rakhine State, Myanmar

WASHINGTON, September 14, 2017 – The World Bank Group today issued the following statement on the situation in Rakhine State, Myanmar:

"The World Bank Group is deeply troubled by the recent deterioration in security, resulting in violence, internal displacement and refugee flows to Myanmar's neighboring countries. Along with the international community, we call on the authorities to ensure the protection of all people residing in Myanmar, and work with all actors to mount an immediate humanitarian response to the crisis in Rakhine State.

As an institution focused on ending poverty, we know that inclusion is key to sustainable development and any form of societal exclusion can not only harm people but also slows development progress. We promote equal access to opportunities for all so that everyone can benefit from economic prosperity and realize his or her full potential.

We stand ready to immediately reallocate available resources from our existing portfolio in Myanmar to support an integrated humanitarian and development response. We can also help prepare emergency operations tailored specifically to the current needs in Rakhine State."
