Facebook, the social media giant, now has more users than the populations of the United States, Brazil, and China – combined. Through the use of its flagship app, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram, Facebook’s central place in the lives of millions and millions of users around the world, including students and educators, is undeniable. Less well known to many is how Facebook’s products and services are being used for educational purposes, including those related to access to knowledge and the development of a variety of (especially digital) skills. And of course Facebook isn’t only about social networking these days. Facebook has been at the cutting edge of activities to expand access to the Internet to communities around the world, and, since its acquisition of Oculus Rift, has become a leader in the use of virtual reality in education.
What exactly is Facebook doing to support teachers and learners, especially as relates to addressing a variety of challenges related to access to knowledge and the development of a variety of (especially digital) skills in the education sector, and what has it been learning along the way?

About the Presenters:
Adam Seldow leads education product partnerships at Facebook where he contributes to building learning communities worldwide and leveraging Facebook’s family of apps and services for education systems, educators and learners. Adam taught high school mathematics and led technology in US school systems. He earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and his masters and doctoral degrees in education policy and leadership from Harvard University.
Kojo Boakye heads Facebook’s strategy around Internet connectivity and access for the Africa region. He leads dialogue with governments, telcos, civil society and academics to support the regulatory framework for connectivity and access for the growing number of Internet users across the continent. He previously led policy and research work for the Web Foundation as well as led a number of initiatives at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization for over a decade.
Lauryn Ogbechie leads Facebook’s education partnerships team, leveraging Facebook’s products and services for education systems, educators and learners. Her team also designs computer science curricula and programs for diverse learners and creates programs that enable young people to build healthy and safe schools and communities. Throughout her career she has focused on building partnerships, education and diversity. Lauryn received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and a masters in business from Harvard Business School.
Nicole Goldstein leads global education partnerships for Facebook. She also leads on skills and job readiness – applied to digital marketing pathways and other high demand professions for the future. Prior to this, she was in a policy and strategy role for Facebook. Before Facebook, she specialized in international education policy for the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development (UKaid) where she undertook long-term assignments in Ghana, Sierra Leone and then for the UK's Prime Minister on funding the education of Syrian refugee students in host countries. Previously, she worked at the World Bank on teacher policies.
Salleha Chaudhry leads on designing new education initiatives, methodologies and research – leading a team of Stanford researchers and product designers for the “Education Modernization” team. Her portfolio involves piloting a range of new ideas in the sector – for secondary school students and at the skills-to-work transition stage. Throughout her career, she has designed and built scaled educational programming – that drive equitable outcomes and support under-represented learners throughout the US, targeting learners of color and young women. She previously headed up program implementation for Girls Who Code.
Sherry Dzinoreva serves as Africa Public Policy Programs Lead for Facebook where she oversees program development across Sub-Saharan Africa. She has worked in various facets of the digital industry, with a primary focus on skills development and education. Before joining Facebook she served as Program Director for Digify Africa, a program that saw over 70,000 young people trained in digital skills across Sub-Saharan Africa. She also cohosted the first Social Media Week Johannesburg, offering free and accessible workshops on digital innovation to a mix of audiences across the city.
