Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience and Land Global Practice at COP28

The World Bank Urban, Disaster Risk Management and Land Global Practice (GPURL) is delighted to participate in a number of events at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai from November 30 - December 12, 2023.

In collaboration with our partners, our aim is to support the COP’s objective to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, with a particular focus on cities, local government, and urban systems.

The World Bank sets Cities and Urban Systems as a priority under its Climate Action Plan and supports both national and local governments to design, finance and implement solutions that help cities build resilience to climate change and decarbonize. In our fiscal year 2023, the World Bank Urban, Water and Transport Global Practices, together with IFC, committed a total of US$8.13 billion toward investments in cities across 30 countries that will reduce emissions by 46.73 million tCO2e, an amount equivalent to the energy used by 5.9 million homes in a year.

For the first time, the COP will host a Summit for local leaders and will also welcome the inaugural global delegation of mayors and governors at the World Climate Action Summit, where cities and local leaders can be recognized as crucial actors in the fight against global warming. We look forward to presenting the concrete actions that the World Bank is supporting in cities across the world for climate impact and to transition to low carbon, climate resilient urbanization pathways.
