00:11 Mining better together
00:13 means overcoming poverty.
00:16 Together.
00:18 Coming
00:19 together as cooperative,
00:21 as mining associations
00:23 and speaking with one boss,
00:25 as we speak with one boy,
00:27 we knowledge exchange among ourselves
00:30 and do our mining
00:32 better.
00:33 To me,
00:34 mining better together means securing business and human rights
00:38 through the labor institutions
00:40 across the supply chain in the artisanal small scale mining.
00:44 For me.
00:46 Mine better together means
00:47 working with all stakeholders
00:50 to formalize
00:51 and to give support
00:53 for artisanal miners.
00:55 For me,
00:56 mining data
00:57 means
00:58 the government,
00:59 the communities,
01:00 and the artisanal and small scale miners coming together.
01:03 To extract minerals sustainably while safeguarding the environment
01:09 and empowering
01:10 marginalized communities.
01:12 Statistics
01:14 have shown
01:15 that
01:16 contribution of small scale mining
01:18 in Tanzania
01:19 has increased from
01:21 less than 10% in 2015
01:25 to 40% in the year 2023.
01:29 Besides amendment of the Mine
01:32 Act,
01:33 other factors contribute to this performance
01:37 is the establishment of a mineral market system
01:41 in the country.
01:42 As of today,
01:44 there are 43 mineral markets
01:46 and 102
01:49 buying centers across
01:51 the country.
01:52 For
01:52 me,
01:53 Mine Better Together is embarrassing collaboration among the government,
01:58 mining company,
01:59 community,
02:00 and other stakeholders,
02:01 including women and marginalized school to promote ethical,
02:05 sustainable,
02:06 and socially responsible mining practices.
02:09 Mine better.
02:13 Line to believe me.
02:15 To me,
02:17 It symbolizes
02:19 the collective responsibility of governments,
02:23 communities.
02:24 In the private sector
02:26 to foster collaboration.
02:29 Inclusivity
02:31 and sustainability in the mining sector,
02:34 it emphasizes
02:37 the need
02:38 for shared benefits
02:40 and a commitment to minimizing
02:43 the social and environmental challenges
02:46 often associated with mining.
02:54 I would
02:55 look at the environment.
02:57 I would change the way the environment is looked after.
03:01 Repurpose repurposing the land,
03:04 rehabilitating the land
03:06 into a more sustainable way.
03:09 Find projects that are sustainable
03:11 while rehabilitating or doing a sustainable project
03:15 like avocado projects,
03:17 like um having cash crops,
03:20 um,
03:21 doing tomatoes,
03:22 doing vegetables
03:24 from the places that would have rehabilitated.
03:27 So that is
03:28 one of the ways I would do to change that to do some more coal mining.
03:32 One thing which can improve the ASM sector
03:35 is securing the identity of the workers in ASM
03:39 through the institutions like the trade unions.
03:42 Important
03:44 to focus on women's issues,
03:46 to enhance value creation
03:49 in mining activities.
03:50 And
03:51 to promote the protection
03:53 of human rights.
03:55 What is pivotal to small scale mining for me
03:58 is that it allows the communities to
04:01 extract geological deposits which are uneconomical for large
04:06 mining powerhouses,
04:08 thereby providing much
04:09 needed revenue
04:11 in the country.
04:11 For example,
04:12 in my country,
04:13 gold mining.
04:14 Accounts for 12% of the gross domestic product.
04:19 Let us develop small scale mining subsector
04:22 by improving their production efficiency and markets
04:26 in order to earn more
04:28 from the small size mineral deposits
04:31 that cannot be developed by large scale mining investors
04:35 to truly mine better together.
04:39 We must watch,
04:40 prioritize formalization efforts,
04:43 capacity building.
04:45 And
04:46 access
04:47 to technology to transform
04:49 artisanal small scale mining
04:52 into a driver of sustainable
04:56 development.
04:57 What really stands for me about artisanal and small scale mining is it promotes,
05:01 it provides livelihood to millions and millions of people,
05:06 particularly in developing countries,
05:08 to reduce poverty and unemployment.
