00:13 It's great to be back here in Romania,

00:16 and I'm back this time to mark 30 years

00:20 since we opened up our office here in Bucharest.

00:25 But Romania actually became a member of the

00:27 World Bank already back in the early 1970s,

00:30 and over these many decades we have worked so closely together

00:35 in so many areas for the development of this country.

00:38 In fact,

00:39 the World Bank has invested in over 70 projects totaling

00:43 about $13 billion.

00:46 The projects that we have supported have spanned agriculture,

00:51 education,

00:52 energy,

00:52 but also areas such as human development,

00:56 governance,

00:58 economic management,

00:59 fiscal management,

01:01 and one very strong area that we have worked in

01:04 has been around disaster risk management and

01:06 building resilience because the country is very prone

01:10 to earthquakes and other natural disasters.

01:19 What has been particularly interesting

01:22 in our partnership with Romania is Romania's

01:25 use of all instruments that the World Bank offers,

01:28 starting with our technical assistance,

01:31 our financial assistance,

01:33 but also Romania sharing with the rest

01:35 of the world their development journey and Experience

01:39 in other countries around the world,

01:41 they are now benefiting

01:42 from the experience,

01:43 particularly in areas of disaster risk management and flood management,

01:47 where Romania's experience

01:49 and principles and strategies around these important issues really stands out

01:54 as international best practice.

02:05 Now let me turn to the last few years when our partnership also has really stepped up

02:10 to respond to COVID,

02:11 the World Bank partnered with Romania to help

02:14 both the health sector

02:15 but also make sure that as students we're going to do distance learning.

02:19 We had strong IT backbone systems as well as ability to learn from

02:25 distance using IT.

02:27 And now of course with a terrible war raging in Ukraine

02:31 which is having massive spillover effects globally

02:34 in the region but also here in Romania,

02:36 we're working very closely to make sure

02:38 we continue to build resilience against shocks

02:41 and here I would also like to highlight that

02:43 Romania plays a very significant role in the region.

02:46 Both in terms of

02:47 diversification of energy to increase

02:50 the ability to have a stronger and resilient energy secure economy

02:55 but also around transport logistics and connectivity.
