Somalia: Food Security is Key to Ending Poverty

Somalia is currently facing the worst drought in 40 years. As in other countries, hunger has increased, amid a series of global shocks affecting the supply of food, including COVID-19-related supply chain problems, extreme weather events, and more recently high food and energy prices exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. According to the recent Africa’s Pulse, in Sub-Saharan Africa, 140 million people were acutely food insecure in 2022, up from 120 million in 2021, and about 284 million of Africa’s population are undernourished. Food security crises are becoming more frequent and deeper in the continent. To realize a thriving and food secure future for Somalia, it will need investment in climate-resilient solutions, smallholder farmers, and addressing of conflict situations in the country.
