Under the umbrella of the Cities and Climate Change Project, the Government of Mozambique achieved comprehensive improvements in floodwater management in the coastal city of Beira. The rehabilitation and extension of the city’s stormwater drainage system was complemented with a green urban infrastructure intervention that transformed a degraded river area into a vibrant, multi-functional park providing flood reduction, recreational, and socio-economic benefits. The funding for this transformation was provided by the International Development Association, the Strategic Climate Fund’s Pilot Program for Climate Resilience, and the German Government. GFDRR and PROFOR (the Program on Forests) provided financing for accompanying technical assistance to strengthen the capacity of local stakeholders and to ensure that best practices and lessons learned from Beira’s experience are shared with others wishing to follow suit.
