Border closures, social distancing measures, and economic lockdowns are among the standard and immediate policies being implemented in the fight against COVID-19. The impact on labor markets—especially on migrant workers and their employers—has been swift and severe. In this e-seminar on May 14, 2020, Mushfiq Mobarak (Professor of Economics, Yale University), discussed preliminary results of several projects in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone to develop evidence-based policy responses to COVID-19 using migration and mobility data. Then Erhan Artuc (Senior Economist, World Bank) presented a dynamic labor mobility framework that incorporates an epidemiological model to explore the effectiveness of various suppression mechanisms such as border and business closures.
