Gansu is the poorest province in China, with a per capita income less than half of the national average and less than a quarter than that of the country’s leading provinces. Through the US$180 million Gansu Revitalization and Innovation Project, the World Bank will work with the province to expand income-generating opportunities and improve last mile infrastructure and services. Jointly with the International Financial Corporation, the project will increase access to finance for micro and small enterprises in the cultural, tourism, and creative industries. More than six million people are expected to benefit directly the project. Lessons learned from the project will be shared with other provinces and countries with similar challenges and development opportunities.
